Time Traveller's Guides - to the heart of the past! Saturday 21 April 2012

This is going to be a very special event. Details have yet to be decided but the plan is to make use of Dartmoor National Park Authority's Grade 1 Listed longhouse, Higher Uppacott, on the edge of Dartmoor, for an afternoon of social history. The original building at Higher Uppacott was first constructed in the middle of the 14th century as a standard yeoman's longhouse and modified over the subsequent three centuries. The house is not large but an 'ordinary' yeoman's residence - and thus is exceptionally rare in this state of preservation. It is not normally open to the public.

The afternoon will fall into three parts. Meeting at 2pm, a small number of guests will be given a tour of the house by me in conjunction with National Park Authority heritage officers. Afterwards (and, I hope, after some refreshments) I will give a talk about daily life in the fourteenth century, based on my Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England. The second event after another break, will bring you two hundred years forward in time, to understand life in the sixteenth century. This talk will be based on my new book, The Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England. Signed copies of the new book (normally £20) will be given out as souvenirs to all those attending. Prices for the afternoon (which will probably last from 2pm-6pm) will be about £50-£60 - to include parking, refreshments, tour of the house, both talks, and a signed book. All profits are to be given to the Dartmoor National Park Authority and will be ringfenced for the conservation of the house. A maximum of twenty tickets will be made available, so do not delay if you are interested in coming. An announcement will be made on Ian Mortimer's site when tickets go on sale, with details of how to apply.
